Children's eye exams
Seeing well is part of learning. A child who cannot see well does not complain, because they do not know others see differently: what they do is change their behavior, and that gets mistaken for inattention.
Call us first
For a child's visit it is best to call first. Based on their age we will guide you on which office and what kind of visit fits, so we can set aside the right time and equipment.
What to expect
30 to 40 minutes, paced for the child.
- A calm welcome. A frightened child does not cooperate, and then the measurement is worthless.
- Measuring with what they recognize. If they do not know their letters yet, we use shapes and symbols. The accuracy is the same.
- Focusing and coordination. Whether both eyes work together tracking an object and focusing up close.
- An eye health check, gentle and without discomfort.
- Explaining it to you, in plain words, along with what makes sense to do.
Signs you can see at home
- Holding books, the tablet or the TV unusually close.
- Rubbing their eyes while reading or doing homework.
- Tilting their head or closing one eye to look far away.
- Skipping lines, or tracking with a finger.
- Headaches after the school day.
Frequently asked questions
What if my child does not know their letters? Not needed. We use charts with shapes they recognize and the measurement is just as accurate.
Is the school screening not enough? School screenings mostly measure distance vision. They leave out sustained close focusing and coordination between the eyes, which are exactly what matters for reading.
Do you have frames for children? Yes: lightweight, flexible and impact-resistant, made for the daily use of an active child.
