Your first visit
If this is your first time with us, here is everything you need to know. Two minutes of reading saves you a phone call.
What to bring
- Photo ID.
- Your vision or health insurance card, if you have one. Even if you are not sure it covers what you need, bring the card: we will check.
- The glasses you wear now, including prescription sunglasses. They tell us where we are starting from.
- Your contact lenses or the box, if you wear them. The box has the exact brand and parameters.
- A list of the medications you take. Some affect vision, and it helps to know.
- Your previous prescription, if you have it handy. Not required.
How long it takes
Between 45 minutes and an hour for a complete exam. If you are choosing frames the same day, allow another half hour.
What happens
- Check-in. Your details and your insurance. If you filled out the request online, this part is quick.
- Vision history. We ask what you have noticed, what you do for work, how many hours you spend on screens, and whether anyone in your family has an eye condition.
- Measurements. Your exact prescription is determined.
- Eye health check. Seeing well and having healthy eyes are not the same thing; both are checked.
- Conversation. We explain what we found and what makes sense to do, in the language you prefer.
- Optical, if you need eyewear. We help you with frames and lenses.
About dilating drops
Depending on the case, drops may be needed to widen the pupil so the back of the eye can be seen clearly. If that happens, your vision will be blurry and light-sensitive for a couple of hours. Bring sunglasses, and if you can, come with someone or plan not to drive afterward. If that is a concern, ask when we call and we will plan around it.
If you are bringing a child
Bring something to keep them occupied while waiting, and their glasses if they wear any. A child's exam is paced for them; if they do not know their letters yet, we use shapes.
After the visit
If you ordered eyewear, we will let you know when it is ready for the final fitting. If there is anything worth monitoring, we will tell you when to come back.
Ready? Send your request and we will call you to arrange the day and time.
